Been waiting a while to make our most exciting announcement yet!
Through pure accident we have a new animal at the park called a “Shig” It was created through the cross breeding of one of our Sheep and a rather confused Boar. As you can see the Shig has taken the wool and body from the sheep whilst still holding the pigs face and legs!
Face of a pig, body of a sheep these creatures are unique and are set to cause a storm in the restaurant industry.
Grant Bell of East Links Farm, Dunbar is the Farmer behind the new breed which tastes neither like Pork nor Mutton and is set to hit our menus under the brandname ‘PUTTON’.
“Visitors to the farm are amazed by the Shigs” says Grant, “they are neither one thing nor the other! When the ewe gave birth to these little oddities I couldn’t believe it, we called them Shiglets.”
The Shigs are on display along with all the other farm animals at East Links Family Park, Dunbar every day between 10am and 5pm.

MASSIVE EASTER EGG HUNT!

Finally winter has been left behind and spring has arrived. As usual spring means an explosion of births at the park; and with 50 Lambs, 17 Piglets, 1 Foal and 1 Calf already, we haven’t been let down!

So continuing with the births; our Skyrian Horse Ianthe gave birth to a lovely little colt (young male) called Ajax; Millie the Belted Galloway Cow gave birth to Cookie, a beautiful calf; our Petrian Pig and Khune Khune Pig both gave birth to 10 and 7 piglets respectively and we have had our second batch of chicks hatch out on Sunday 6th March!

Coming up over the 25-28th of March we have our Massive Easter Egg Hunt where we’ll have thousands of eggs hidden across the Park. Prizes are a crème egg if you find a red egg and a boxed Easter egg if you find a golden egg! There’s no need to book and the rest of the park is open as normal. It’s always great fun and this year we have over 2500 eggs to give away!

We had a great time at the Dunbar Science Festival on the 5th and 6th of March teaching children and adults about the different stages of a chicken’s life; from egg through incubation to hatching; and then growing up. We took along some of our little chicks who were huge crowd pleasers! We were also interviewed by East Coast FM who covered the event! There were loads of amazing and interesting shows and stalls and we thoroughly recommend that you head along next year!

Work is now underway on our next big attraction – the WET JET ZONE which we hope to open in time for the summer! It will be a HUGE floating water gun fight on our pond. At the moment the platform is being built and work will progress from there.

Cottage Industry Workshop number 2 has opened. It’s a Farm Shop called The Garden Gate and sells a variety of local produce. Cools Confectionary too is open for business selling a massive selection of chocolates and confectionary! We have been lucky enough to try some of their amazing products! There are still two Workshops available to rent. If interested email julie@eastlinks.co.uk.

Newsletter February 2016

Time Flies When Your Having Fun!

It feels like January had barely started before it was finished, and we’re now well into February! The weather is still as crazy as ever but at least we’re now getting the odd dry day in between all the rain! And we’re open 10am-5pm now that the evenings are holding their light a little longer.

The lambing has exploded at the park and we already have over 30 lambs as well as lots of goat kids. We’re going to be lambing right through ‘till mid April so make sure you all get down to see our new born lambs!

The births haven’t stopped at lambs and goats either! We had a lovely little Skyrian Foal born on the 17th of February, followed on the 18th by a HUGE litter of Piglets! Check out our Facebook page for photos and updates on these. We have also started hatching chicks out of our incubator, the first hatch of the year being a great success!

We will be helping out at the Dunbar Science Festival again this year so please come along to this amazing event and see us. We’ll be attending the main event on 5th and 6th of March at Dunbar Primary school. Then Easter is early this year so look out for our Annual Massive Egg Hunt from 25th-28th of March!

We’re also very happy to announce that Cools Confectionary have opened their Cottage Industry Workshop at the park, selling a massive selection of sweets and chocolates! (It’s been a huge hit with the staff, never mind the lucky customers!). Their opening hours match the Park’s so please feel free to come and treat yourself! This will be followed very closely by the opening of The Garden Gate, a farm shop selling a varied range of local produce. There are still two Cottage Industry Workshops available for rent, so if you have a business that would fit well at the Park please feel free to email Julie Merrilees on julie@eastlinks.co.uk.

For customer safety the park will be closed today due to high winds and snow forecast. Back open tomorrow. Apologies for any inconvenience.

All dry now!

Just a quick note to reassure everyone that we are still open and all the ice and puddles have dried up in this ‘warmer’ weather. We are now open from 10am until 4.30pm as the sunlight extends. Our newborn lambs and goat kids would love a visit!

Happy New Year!

We started the New Year with a Splash (literally!). Many areas of the Park are holding water due to all the rainfall, and whilst the ducks and geese think this is fantastic we certainly don’t!

The wet weather hasn’t held our animals back though. We have had loads of little Goat Kids and Lambs born. Whilst sheep are quite suited to wet cold weather the little goat kids don’t enjoy it, so we have moved them all inside the Passageway which is Super Cute!

So we’re Open 10-4 just now with Wellies Advised until we get some drier weather. However, it’s a good idea to phone in advance when the weather is poor, especially on weekdays, just to check that the park is going to remain open all day.

The refurbishment of our Soft Play Barn and Ball Blast Arena has been a huge hit and the new equipment is holding up well to all the use they are receiving!

Next on our agenda is the extension of the current Cafe and development of a new Admissions entrance and Shop. We are also only a few weeks away from the opening of our first Cottage Industry Workshop adjacent to the main building.

Coming up we have a Flock of Sheep that will be Lambing throughout February. Then we have our Main East Links Flock Lambing between March and April.

Easter is very early this year so look out for our Annual Massive Egg Hunt from 25th-28th of March. As a little treat, we are going to be offering a “love”ly deal for all Lovers and Their Families for Valentines Weekend 13th-14th February! (Further details available next month)

Rain rain, go away!!

It seems like our summer may have arrived (touch wood) and after a rainy start we’re finally getting some Sun!

The start of the summer holidays has brought lots of Familiar Faces back to see us, as well as many New Ones! It’s been great to hear all the stories from last year and also receive all the lovely comments on our new Crazy Golf which to a lot of the yearly visitors has been a big surprise!

Another big attraction this summer has been our Bottle Fed Piglets! Our Sow Peppa had a litter of 10 piglets and whilst most pigs can manage this number easily Peppa has struggled in the past so we decided to adopt 4 of them to make it easier for her. The Four Piglets are thriving now and love all the attention from everybody even sometimes coming for a stroke as a dog would!

Recently our Pygora Goats had yet another outing in their showbiz lives, this time modelling in front of Edinburgh Castle for a Cashmere Clothing Store called The Tailor Retailored. Previously they starred in a Children’s Viking TV show as well as taking part in the prestigious “Poo in the Park” for Haddington Rugby Club.

Our Cottage Industry Workshops are coming along brilliantly! We now have the frames for the roofs on and they’re looking fantastic. To fill these workshops we are looking for small businesses with products like pottery, home produce, textiles and bakery that fits in with our farm/countryside theme, although you may have a product/service that would fit even better! If you or anyone you know would be interested in renting a workshop, email us at julie@eastlinks.co.uk for more information.

Summer Holidays!

Well the summer holidays are upon us and it’s all systems go at the park! Meaning that until the 23rd of August we’re open until 6PM!

Since our last newsletter we’ve seen the arrival of our Tartan Sheep as well as the birth of a Highland Calf. Our little Rhea Chicks are all doing brilliantly too!

July has also seen the start of our Cottage Industry Workshops, we now have the walls up for all five of the buildings and will soon be progressing from there. We are looking for small businesses with products like pottery, home produce, textiles, bakery etc that will fit in with our farm/countryside theme. If you or anyone you know would be interested in renting one, email us at grant@eastlinks.co.uk

We had a great trip to the Highland Show and saw many of our regulars as well as hopefully making a few more! It was great to see so many local businesses at show and even better to sample some of the amazing products they offer! Special congratulations must be given to The Chocolate Tree who won the Best Stall Award in the food hall.

We currently have a lovely litter of Rabbit Kittens available and another one coming on for sale soon both are absolutely adorable! As well as this we just had a new delivery of Lohman Brown Laying Hens arrive and they are only about 2 weeks away from laying eggs. 3 Lohman Brown Hens can produce enough eggs to feed a family of 4 while having a couple left over to keep the neighbours sweet.

Sun sun sun!!!

Well it seems like summer has finally arrived (hope I’m not speaking to soon) and along with the good weather the births continue for yet another month. We now have a little Red Deer Calf and are expecting lots more of both the Red and Fallow deer to give birth over the next month or so. June has also seen the arrival of the first of our Rhea Chicks. Rhea are similar in some ways to an ostrich and originate from South America. You can see pictures and keep up to date with our new arrivals and additions by ‘liking’ our Facebook page.

The New Crazy Golf has been hugely popular during its first month with many competitive Mums and Dads losing to their children. Also luckily we had chosen the floating balls when ordering as there has been many a shot found the pond!!!

We still have a good number of our Lohman Brown Chickens available to purchase. These make perfect pets and also supply you with an egg every day! There are also some Baby Bunnies and Guinea Pigs coming up for sale in the next few weeks.

The concrete floor for our 5 Cottage Industry Workshops has just been poured and is looking great. These “Workshops” will provide businesses with a great platform in a great location, with very high footfall. We are looking for small businesses with products like pottery, home produce, textiles, bakery etc that will fit in with our farm/countryside theme. Crazy Golf!

More births this month to report! Our Skyrian Pony ‘Bdora’ gave birth to a colt (male) foal at the end of last month and this month one of our Donkeys ‘Daisy’ gave birth to a filly (female) foal. Both are doing well and are either running about daft or sleeping. We were gifted ‘Milo’ an African Leopard Tortoise this week who is now keeping ‘Mambo’ our African spurred tortoise company. They are both quite young at the moment (as tortoises can live up to 100 years old) but could double in size! Keep up to date on new arrivals and additions by ‘liking’ our Facebook page.

Our new 18 Hole Crazy Golf attraction is now OPEN! Located in and around our pond it includes two bridges and a multitude of farm themed holes and obstacles, such as ‘Milk Churn Turn’ and ‘Hill ‘o’ Hope’. Even the most accomplished of golfers may find it just as tricky as a novice. Spotlights have also been added giving you the potential to book private night time events.

The Duck Race around the pond opened and is a great success. This allows families to race against each other using rubber ducks (although the feathered variety are enjoying this racing channel too!).

Work has already started on the next project which involves the building of 5 Cottage Industry Workshops. These will provide businesses a starting platform in an area which already has a high footfall of visitors. We are looking for small businesses with products like pottery, home produce, textiles, bakery etc that would fit in with our farm/countryside theme.

Easter Madness!

The Easter Holidays are nearly over and the park has been busy after some great weather. The animals have been busy too, ‘Milly’ our Belted Galloway cow gave birth to a bull calf at the end of last month and today ‘Belle’ the British Blue cow gave birth to a heifer calf and one of our pigs delivered 4 piglets! The little hut which used to house our quail has been transformed into a housing and play area for Degus. Degus are small rodents sometimes referred to as ‘brush-tailed rats’ which originate from South America. Keep up to date on new arrivals and additions by ‘liking’ our Facebook page.

Work is almost complete on our 18 Hole Crazy Golf attraction which will be open in a few weeks time after the pre Easter weather delayed progress. At the moment 14 out of the 18 holes have been turfed, obstacles made/painted and farm themed statues positioned. Located in and around our pond it will include lots of farm themed holes, bridges, obstacles and will give kids a chance to teach parents a trick or two.

The Duck Race around the pond opened and is a great success. This allows families to race against each other using rubber ducks (although the feathered variety are enjoying this racing channel too!). Starting at the duck slide it takes around 8-10 minutes from Start to Finish and you can have a leisurely walk round cheering your duck on. The duck race also brought with it an unexpected attraction – the frogs and toads which can now be easily spotted along the edge.

The Massive Annual Easter Egg Hunt took place over the Easter weekend with 120 Easter Eggs and over 2,400 crème eggs being given out. Hundreds of children and adults joined in the Easter fun getting their bunny noses and whiskers painted with donations going towards new mobility scooters which have now been purchased.

East Links Membership cards and Family Ticket vouchers are available all year round and make great birthday presents. If you visit the park more than 4 times a year, ask about our yearly membership.

BBC News!

Last month brought with it numerous births and lambing season began today with our first single lamb being born. We now have 11 goat kids bouncing around which consist of 4 sets of twins and one set of triplets! One of the goat kids, now called Annabelle, had been rejected by her mother and is now being bottle fed by our staff. You can meet her in the small animal barn where you can find her cuddling up with the chicks! All of the others are doing fine and are being kept under shelter in the passageway for a few weeks before being let out with the rest of the tribe. We also had a new macho (male) lama cria born last week and there are lots of chicks hatching, next batch on 12th March. Keep up to date on new arrivals and additions by ‘liking’ our Facebook page.

Our prairie dogs gained stardom a few weeks ago staring on the BBC News and also a few newspapers. The story was regarding a voluntary agreement between East Links and Scottish National Heritage to control invasive non-native species in Scotland. We built them a new enclosure to ensure that they will be kept within the boundaries of the park. They are enjoying their new enclosure and all the extra attention they are getting after their TV appearance.

Work is continuing on our 18 Hole Crazy Golf attraction which will be open Spring 2015. All eighteen holes have been made, obstacles made/painted and the turf has just arrived. Located in and around our pond it will include lots of farm themed holes, bridges, obstacles and will give kids a chance to teach parents a trick or two.

The next big event at East Links will be our Massive Annual Easter Egg Hunt which will take place 3rd to 6th April. Hundreds of eggs are hidden each day out in the park which can be exchanged for a chocolate one. Watch out for the golden eggs!

Due to emergency electrical work, tomorrow Wednesday 04/03/15, there will be a few pieces of play equipment which will not be in operation. The rest of the park will be open as normal and our newborn lamb, lama cria, goat kids and chicks would still love a visit! A limited Cafe menu will be available.
